Khirre Phul Gulab De Won First Place in national Bhangra competition

BOSTON—North Carolina’s Khirre Phul Gulab De won the first prize in the national competition organized by Boston Bhangra on Saturday in Boston. The second prize went to Bhangra Empire and the third prize was bagged by New England Bhangra Club.

“This is the 12th year of the competition and I’m very proud of our committee,” said Boston Bhangra President Rohit Bhambi. “We continue to thrive by promoting our rich culture to everybody who is interested in dance. This is proven by the fact that over 30 percent of our ticket sales were to non-South Asians.”

Khirre Phul Gulab De, which won the first prize, is North Carolina’s premier all-male team. The team display Punjabi culture at its finest, with plenty of fun twists. Khirre Phul Gulab De had competed in Boston for the first time 5 years ago.

Bhangra Empire, which won the second place,was established in 2006. From the White House to America’s Got Talent, from the Golden State Warriors’ NBA court to the World Series Champion SF Giants’ MBL stadium, from an overseas performance at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London with 5,000 viewers to the Formula One Grand Prix in Bahrain with 600,000,000 viewers, Bhangra Empire has entertained all.

New England Bhangra Club, the third place winner is New England’s only all girls competitive bhangra team. Having only been in the circuit for a few years, they have already performed and competed at some of the most prestigious competitions in the country, including Boston Bhangra Competition, Bhangra Fever, Bhangra Blitz, and Pao Bhangra Olympics. This past spring, they also won their first trophy at Sunset Bhangra in Tampa, Florida.

If you like Bhangra, Boston was the place to be on November 14th, 2015 when Boston Bhangra hosted its 12th annual Boston Bhangra Competition at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. This was their twelfth straight event in the massive 3,000 person hall.

The competition level was very diverse and extremely competitive as they had teams from all over North America. Teams hailed from California, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, Toronto, New York, and of course, Boston.

To add even more excitement to the event, Boston Bhangra had a special performance by the world famous Bhangra star, Kay V Singh.

Shalimar of India was the food vendor of choice as they sold snacks, dinner and drinks at the venue. E3UK, Ocean Spray, and India New England were some of the bigger sponsors that helped to make this show a reality.
